The Skinny
One thing that I've learned in the twenty-plus years since I first threw my hat into the ring that is the fiber arts industry: it's all about the people. It's about the people who buy the yarn and make the things, certainly. What industry could survive without the folks paying the bills? But it's also very much about the people making things happen: the designers, the instructors, the tech editors, the editor editors, the graphic artists, the testers and model makers, and yes, the shop folk as well.
I know from my personal experience that a solid staff can make or break a yarn shop, and I was fortunate enough to have a wonderful staff. That said, I worked to keep them wonderful, too. However and whenever I could, I worked support for them into everything I was working on. When new yarns came out, they each got at least a small sample to try out themselves so that they could speak from an informed place about how the yarn worked up, how it draped, how it felt as you worked with it, and how it blocked out. Once or twice, I even had custom colorways dyed specifically for each of my staff to introduce them to a new yarn being released by the dyer.
That's a big part of what Twisted Henry's about. It's about making a place where those who work in the industry can learn and grow while earning a living. It's about providing a platform where instructors can ply their trade and earn not only class fees but a portion of yarn sales to boot. It's about offering classes in tech editing and chart building... and even in teaching to help educate the next generation of fiber professionals. And yes, it's truly about you.
